    Except no substitutes.
This pack is amazing. I have no idea whatsoever why they would stop selling this product. I'm reduced for a diligent hunt for a used one for my second dog.

Our family runs an outfitting business and we do a lot of family and scouting excursions. When we aren't leading a group, we each bring a dog along. Bear, a 96 lb male has the ultra (L) and Echo and Ricochet 45 and 65 lbs respectively, each have the classic. Echo wears a S while Ricochet wears a M. Our dogs put these packs to the test, diving off rocky shelves into water, brushing up against cacti and mesquite, dragging them against tree trunks and rocks. Bear has a penchant for soaking in water holes while wearing his pack. Despite the punishment, these packs hold up, stay in place and keep the contents dry. Occasionally, the dogs join us on group trips and clients are always ask about the packs. I've heard some folks complain about sizing on the Classic, but I'm thinking they probably didn't practice due diligence in measuring their dog and/or adjusting the pack properly. We have never had a problem with the Classic or the Ultra. I'm always happy to tell our clients that these are REI exclusives and they shouldn't hesitate to get one for their dogs.

We have had this dog pack for a couple years now with at least 4 2-night hikes behind it. Our German Short hair Pointer weighs about 75 pounds with a teeny waist and a big chest and can really run around a lot. I did not think anything would work! This pack with the three well designed buckles with very good adjustment range fits like a glove and stays put. The Panniers are symmetrical unlike the Kidney shaped ones and hold a big load of dog food, some canned goods and other stuff of ours like our plastic wine glasses and the load stays balanced. The dog has no issues when we put it on him. Great product REI!

This is a nicely built pack, and living in western Washinton I liked that it was waterproof since sometimes we do end up hiking in the rain occasionally. Our border collie cross is 27 inches around the girth. We bought the small. It fit great until we got to the belly strap. It about squeezed her in half. Needless to say, she was not impressed. So I ordered the medium in case I could get it to fit. The belly strap did, and even had a little room to spare, but alas, the pack was way to big. We ended up getting the Ruffwear Palisades pack in a small. It adjusts perfectly and she is happy with it on.

My dog is that strange in-between size where I would say she is a medium size. At about 40 pounds, she the total definition of the word “mutt”. Some sort of german shepherd/Belgian malinois mixed with something much more lean. I have been to every sporting goods/hiking/camping/pet store in 50 miles and nearly every pack wouldn’t fit her. The Smalls are for dogs maybe one step up from being considered “toy” size, and most of the mediums were just way too big. Either the pack/pockets would hang well below her chest, or the straps around her chest/stomach/neck at their tightest setting would still leave enough room for her to easily slip out of. The few that actually fit were clearly terrible quality; exposed zippers, nylon straps with little to no padding or buffer where they would make contact with her fur, tops that weren’t designed to let air through, cheap plastic rings to clip the leash to, etc. To say that my dog is very active would be an understatement, and it was obvious that the cheap packs wouldn’t survive more than a couple of hours. The REI brand pack was the last one I tried, and not only was it designed well (mesh top so dogs don’t overheat, hidden zippers that don’t let dirt and mud cover them, sturdy metal rings, padding everywhere the straps touch the dog) but the Medium fit her like a glove. Everything was adjustable. She has a silhouette similar to a sight-hound, long muscular legs, big chest, and a very small stomach. The straps that connect near her back legs/stomach at almost the tightest setting was perfect, and didn’t affect the balance or fit of the much less tight chest/neck strap. The capacity was perfect for her. It was big enough for her to carry a bottle and bladder full of water, her food, snacks, bowl and first-aid kit with plenty of room to spare. It’s definitely big enough to easily over-load her, but not so big that it gets in the way of her climbing and maneuvering in-between narrow spaces. I honestly couldn’t be happier with the purchase. It’s expensive, but if you’re shopping at REI it’s clear you’re not looking for cheap gear. If you have an in-between-medium sized dog it’s adjustable enough to fit really well, and after a full weekend of hiking, it held up perfectly. It basically looks someone took it from the store brand new, and then covered it with mud and dog-hair. Which is totally fine! The only complaint I can think of is that the material of the pack is a complete dog-hair magnet. It’s an extremely minor issue, and spending an hour digging and brushing embedded dog hair out of the pack is much better than having to replace it after a couple of uses. 5/5 would buy again

I have had this pack for about three years now and we love it. This hits a great niche between the pricey Ruffwear and the cheap, poorly fitting packs available for less money. The large fits an 80lbs Labrador wonderfully. We have hiked well over 900 miles since purchasing this pack. It has actually held up better than my Gregory pack! We have not had any issues with chafing as others have described. We are just now seeing some wear on the front edges. I wish that there was a patch of the material that is used on many pack bottoms and shoe rands for protection there. I also wish there were a few lash tabs for his bed roll, but we made our own, and they work well. Yes Ruffwear has a few more features, but at this price point, there is nothing better out there.

I am unfortunately unable to give a thorough review of this product as it did not fit our pup when we brought it home today. The size chart stated 26"-35" for a size small. Our pup measured 27" around the rib cage and 23" around her belly. Given the measurements she should have plenty of room for adjustment and ample room to grow. Sad to say this was not the fact. All the straps were fully extended and she was almost too big for the chest strap and entirely too big for the belly strap. We will be making another hour drive to return this product tomorrow. I would suggest bringing your pup with you to avoid the same situation as the size chart is inaccurate. Hopefully we will find one that will fit properly.

This backpack was very easy to put on my dog and the adjustments were very easy to use. I was worried that they would come loose on a hike but after a 4 mile 2000 ft climb they held in the same position. The pack has lots of room for food and water and I also put her boots in it. We have hiked about thirty miles with it now and it shows no signs of wear.
