Read More Bought this for a hike across Zion NP. The interface is clunky and the printed owners manual is weak. The electronic manual is better, but you have to know to plug it into a computer and go look for it on the small hard drive. I don't like how you have to buy individual maps for each region of the country ($90 ea) and..they expire after a year! Also, if you have more than one map, be ready to buy a memory card ($25). The cost quickly went from $180 to $385 before I even got to use it. The interface and terms are not intuitive, so it takes a while to figure out how to get it to do what you want it to do (tell me how to get from point a to point b). Overall, not worth the investment. -

Read More I bought this Garmin GPS to take with me hiking in Yellowstone. I bought a CD of maps to download the ones I needed. The manual that came with the unit had absolutely no instructions on how to load maps onto the unit. What good is a GPS if you can't load maps onto it? Fortunately I called the REI store and they put me in touch with someone who told me how to load the maps. If you go to the Garmin website, there is no directions on how to load them. Their technical support is really poor and their manuals are totally useless. Machine works great, but no technical support. Would never buy another Garmin product, -

Read More purchased for a back country trek and was unable to use since: 1- It does not come with full instructions. 2 - the maps would not download for 2 weeks because of a "glitch" per Garmin in the software. Not the easiest gizmo to work with. The display is decent but small and not very good in bright sunlight. Honestly haven't had a chance to use it a lot, but until I can use it more proficiently, I'll give it an average score -

Read More The etrex 20 is a very hard to use. The direction are not easy to follow and I would not recommend the device for people who are not really tech savvy. I had several people try to help me use it even store personnel and each one had trouble using the device. Wanted to use for an Appalachain Trail hike. Put in way points however when I tried to use it on the trail the only thing it did well was tell time. With the extra batteries I had to carry for the trip it was extra weight I did not need to carry. I do not recommend them. -

Read More The GPS is helpful if you get totally lost and need to get back to your starting point but I took a test drive to El Cerrito and didn't see the trail names ..etc marked well. Ended up loosing the trail as soon as we hit some roads. I didn't buy the topo bundle. Maybe I'm expecting too much - we are getting attached to the ease of use of the PDAs and this GPS feels too primitive and bothersome to use. I will probably stick to my paper topo maps. -

Read More I have had many Garmins, unfortunately Garmin does allow me to design the perfect handheld unit... I have the Etrex 30 also, I'm always looking for better battery life. I don't need an electronic compass. I am impress with the battery life, especially with the back-light turned down low... I do miss the sharing wirelessly feature that the 30 has but a minor inconvenience. For my purpose this is about as good as it gets. I use it for pre planning my hike, tracking my hikes, geocaching -paperless- Off all the garmins I have had, about 8, this is my favorite. This device also picks up the Russian satellites
Read More I'm sure this GPS is loaded with cool features but you can't use any as the manual is weak! There are barely any explanations in it on how to operate the device and organize your trip. Even the online tutorials on Garmin's website are not great. Very succinct guidance, half of my setup did not work properly. The best was to learn after purchase that you have to purchase maps and trails to have something more detailed in your GPS: $90 to $100 per map and the maps are only available for 1 year! So be ready to spend at least twice as much money as you thought you would for something that you will spend days understanding how to set up. I'll be in the smoky mountains next week and will not bring this device as it is useless.
