Garmin's eTrex 10 is sort of like the red-headed stepchild of their GPS lineup. While it includes GLONASS coverage and a USB port, total memory capacity has been limited to a spartan 8MB. The low-resolution monochrome screen is a throwback to older units, but has the benefit of reducing battery consumption. This GPS is not for those looking for lots of bells & whistles. It is aimed for those who want something very basic but with excellent accuracy (actually EPE). Use it to mark waypoints, log your hikes, find your way back to your parked car, locate that fishing hole or tree stand, etc. I was surprised to see that the display model was getting 9 ft. "accuracy" inside the store, effectively beating out all other units on display. Impressive for the price! If Garmin would just bump up the memory capacity, it would be about perfect.

I'm not a GPS unit "power user" and I found the etrex 10 reasonably easy to use and fairly intuitive. You can easily mark a waypoint (by easy, I mean dead simple); enter a different location (waypoint) fairly simply by creating a new one and entering the coordinates; easily set up a "breadcrumb" track with user- or device-defined intervals (in other words, mark your way out of an area); and load geocache coordinates into the device. I found the quick start guide to be all I needed to get up and running, the rest was easily learned through trial and error. One caveat: the compass. You have to be moving for the compass to give you an accurate reading, a fact not easy to figure out at first. All in all this is a great device at a great price. I was a bit worried about buying this device, based on the reviews of it being difficult to use. In my experience, that is not that case at all. It's quite easy to use.
  • I agree with the previous reviewer ...
... the only addition that eTrex 10 CAN display well detailed topo map of necessary region instead of useless basemap.

Any problems with instructions or usage are resolved readily by calling Garmin and you'll find a thorough knowledgeable and friendly understandable human. Apparently it is actually part of their plan - there are so many features to describe that each individual user would get lost in the details of features they aren't interested in if a complete instruction manual was part of the package. A 50 page still insufficient .pdf instruction manual is available for download. All I wanted was what theForerunner 10 and Edge 10 has - which is distance and time reporting followed up by being able to review a topo map of one's epic. Because I do long ski tours, trail hike/runs and canoe and kayak trips I wanted the 25 hour battery life with the option of carrying extra batteries for a multi-day trip. The extra device weight and bulk is not a problem for me. After talking to Garmin BEFORE buying the eTrex I found I was able to MANUALLY Upload my tracks to the Garmin Connect website which I prefer to the Base Camp software which the eTrex is more directly compatible with. And with all Garmin Devices you can also plug your tracks into Google Earth to view !

the most difficult thing I have ever tried to use. Completely confusing. I tested it out in an area which I knew very well. When using the breadcrumbs/backtrack feature, it tried to lead me back the wrong way.!! This is a good thing, thank goodness I already knew for sure which way to go, I would still be out there walking if relying on this product.

The eTrex 10 has the same GPS receiver as the costly 20 and 30, without maps. If you can read the B&W screen, the 10 is perfect. Its reliable, tough, and waterproof. Lithium AAs, 60+ hrs and not exhaust the batteries, GPS+WAAS+GLONASS on. With NiMH rechargeables, 33 hrs, 41 hours with GPS ON only. B&W screen is great in bright sun, backlit OK in darkness, color versions hard to see in sunlight but best when backlit. You can rearrange menus to suit for fastest use. GLONASS ON locks faster in canyons and cities, and realizes best accuracy, 6', when GPS only struggles. I use only tracking and backtracking, marking waypoints, generate UTM/UPS grid references for map & compass; you can set most any map datum known even non-USA maps. I do all housekeeping on PC with BaseCamp, links without bugs, then easy port to Google Maps for detailed terrain & track analysis: confirm distances, time, etc., the 10 reports. Button+ joystick good for gloved, wet or dirty hands. Wash unit clean but makes cumbersome to set routes or ID tracks, also small screen very cramped; best to set routes via PC, only use eTrex interface for emergency. On eTrex 20, 1:24K topo maps not enough detail versus paper map or large tablet map. Why pay $100+ for Garmin maps or struggle installing free raster maps when viewing window only size of business card? Free maps slow to scroll, slower still to zoom in. I think eTrex line too small for maps. Main con is more features than full manual details. Took 1 week of study before used in the field. Dropped many times into dirt and 3' of water to test toughness. Joystick can activate unit if place in pocket, best to use carabiner clip, belt clip breaks at hinge with rough use or age. Over 200 hrs of field use.

I use this for hiking and backpacking. It took a few trips to REALLY figure this thing out because there are no detailed instructions, but I found it easy to learn. So far every trail I have used this I know very well so i mostly use the device for stats like speed, distance, elevation and stuff like that which i like knowing, especially while backpacking. It can be a little slow at times but not often. It seems to get really good battery life. I've been using it a lot and have only had to change the batteris once. Be warned, if your looking for something to use in place of a map and compass, this is not it. It works best being used alongside a map and compass.
  • Nice, but complicated.
Being from the non-tech generation, this unit is too difficult for me to figure out on my own. I'm constantly having to ask for help.
