Read More My rescue dog developed bilateral hip dysplasia at a very young age (6 mos). Because she subtlety drags her rear feet, her nails stay very short, so when there's a lot of salt on the ground, she'll pull up one rear leg or another and is obviously uncomfortable. [In other seasons, I've put them on for short hikes so her hind legs can have more traction on slick surfaces.] With these shoes (size L)--once she forgets they're on--she runs around like a nut. To echo other reviewers, they could use an updated design (perhaps like the Summit version). In deep, crunchy snow (~8 inches or more), the rear ones are hard to cinch down and have come off. Her rear pads are narrower and more symmetrical than her hunky front paws which is where the spinning effect can happen. I imagine this issue is more true for any breed that has narrow pads (especially in the rear). I'm looking at another brand's safety gaiters for dogs to supplement these boots, but look forward to design improvements by Ruffwear (front/rear sizing and waterproofing hopefully). I just used a Nikwax product for waterproofing. Another review later on that..... -

Read More Our rescue dog has been wearing these shoes for the last 10 years. She has a metal bar in her right leg due to previous abuse. Because her pad is flat, she wears a sock and one shoe when we go walking to protect her paw. She is so use to wearing this that she sits and hold her leg up for us to dress her. This shoes has given her the opportunity to run and walk and enjoy her outings which occur every day. -

Read More My standard poodle's 4 legs were completely paralyzed for almost three months. He had surgery and physical therapy and gradually began walking. His vet/surgeon told me to go to REI to get boots for him. These boots have helped him walk and not fall down as much because they give him traction on concrete, tile and wood floors. They are great and should be promoted as walking aids as well as hiking, etc. boots. He doesn't mind wearing them most of the day so I guess they are comfortable for him.. This picture was taken soon after he began walking at the hospital. Thanks so much. LaDina Epstein -

Read More I bought this product for my rottweiler for running and walking on trails- initially the boots seemed finE-then after 5 minutes of walking-running the shoes had flipped upside down (sole of shoe was facing upwards) i had to constantly check and re-ajust the shoes and strap- tightning more and more and after worrying if im cutting blood flow i took them off. So far they had stayed in my closet for months wihtout use because of it. I have double checked that they are the right size and i also purchased the sock linners hoping it will fix the problem-but no they still flip around on his paws. Its unfortunate sice they are a bit pricey- also-even though the dog is wearing shoes-they still get foxtails and small rock within them, so you have to check your dogs shoes just like you would your own to avoid injury to their paws. -

Read More I bought these boots for my smooth coat Border Collie for the cold winter months here in MN. There were nights she could barely go out to do her business due to her feet being too cold. So I figured I better just bite the bullet and get her some durable boots that will last. I really like these because they are simple but still durable for hiking and running but still keeps her feet protected from chemicals used on the roads, ice, etc... The only thing that I see as an issue is that when used in deep snow is that snow then gets into the band above the actual shoe and then keeps ice/snow around her lower leg therefore I only use them on packed snow. But for simple walks, trail running(Summer and/or Winter) I have had great luck! -

Read More We tried the Ruffwear grip treks in the snow on our short haired American Staffordshire Terrier, for a short distance they seemed to work well. He wasn't slipping on the ice they had good grips, however they kept loosening up and we had to keep stopping to tighten and readjust them on his feet. We took him out snowshoeing and unfortunately they rubbed him raw in a few places on his feet and we ended up having to take them off. We are thinking this may be due to his short hair, we aren't giving up yet we plan on trying them again with doggy socks to see if they will stay on better and rub less. I would not recommend them for a short haired breed, but they work great on our long haired border collie.
Read More We got these for our "city dog" in advance of a death valley camping trip to protect her feet from all the sharp rocks. After getting over the initial awkwardness of having something on her feet, she ran around like a puppy! We were thrilled. However, after hiking for a bit there were several issues: rear ones slide off, front feet developed hot spots from rubbing even with the socks, rear feet (apparently) get foot cramps from cinching up the velcro in order to try to keep the boots in place. Overall a mixed review. They would be great, if they would stay in place and not cause the pup other issues.
