Red provides enough light to find things in the tent without hurting your night vision. The white is bright enough to read with though not ideal. -

Read More I bought a couple of these for my dog's pack for a through-hike for a stretch of the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin. They work great. The only complaints are that the battery life is pretty short and they need to be changed relatively frequently to keep the light bright. Also, the back is hard to open and close to put in a new battery when the light is new

Read More I bought this on a whim for my dog to wear while out camping and it's exactly doing what it's meant to do...provide light. She's an all black dog so this was super helpful in helping to keep track of her at night. I liked the brightness of the light and that it gave you another option on what kind of light you'd like to use (straight or flicker)
