Read More The instructions to install the led upgrade kit, all drawings, no words, where a bit baffling. We removed a part that we should not have so we ruined one of our lights. The kit worked o.k. in another flashlight. The switch proved unreliable, so we threw it away and just use the original MagLite switch. We recommend the LED bulb upgrade, but not the IQ switch. -

This is my second purchase of this combo, thought the original one gave out but found the contact points needed cleaning bad. Very happy with Nite Ize. -

Read More Short version: It started malfunctioning soon after I bought it, and then failed not too long after that. Long version: I bought this Mini Mag upgrade before I left for a trip to India. I thought this would be perfect since I already owned a Mini Mag, and I could upgrade it to a much brighter LED for a reasonable price. I also liked the switch on the back of the light for turning it on and off. I had no use for the strobe functions, but I suppose they could be useful in certain situations. At first I thought it was awesome. Worked great, really bright beam. I was quite happy. One thing about the LED upgrade is the beam can no longer be focused, which I knew ahead of time and had no problem with. This does however mean that the adjustable "head" of the Mini Mag needs screwed in/out within a certain range, which is rather wide, for the new switch to work. After not long the light wouldn't turn on when I pushed the button. I found that if I screwed the head out all the way, then started turning it in while I pushed the button, when the head was screwed in enough the light would start working. Sometimes it would work for a while after this, and sometimes I would turn it off and try immediately to turn on, and it wouldn't work. The head had not been rotated, it was in the same position as when I turned it off, and the light would not turn on. I would have to screw the head out and in while pushing the button to finally get it to come on. I did this for a while, since I had no other flashlight. Then at some point, it just ceased to function in any useful way. Now the only way to get it to do anything is to hold the button down, and that causes it to go into the fast strobe mode until you release the button. I did try replacing the batteries in case this was some sort of low voltage issue, and the problem continued. Spend your money on a decent LED light and don't bother trying to upgrade an old light. -

Read More I bought the LED upgrade kit because I (obviously) already had the AA Mini Mag with the incandescent bulb. Other than terrible light output, there was nothing wrong with my old flashlight. However, I felt bad throwing the old light in the trash when it just needed a simple upgrade. My problem is that this "upgrade" costs the same as buying a brand new AA LED Maglite and the new Maglite is brighter (+10 lumens). This upgrade is priced within a few dollars of the new Maglite XL series which are significantly brighter, more compact and better featured. I feel better reusing an existing product but I think this should cost 1/2 what it does. There's certainly no added value, IMO.
