Mar 4, 2016Best last-minute purchaseI bought this pillow right before going camping. It worked wonderfully and it packs down very small.

Read More I just tried this pillow out over the weekend on a quick one night trip. I enjoyed the pack size because it takes up almost zero room in the pack and it's pretty light. Unfortunately, one night is all I could stand. The material is incredibly slippery and it's a squirrely pillow if you shift around in your sleep. The right amount of air is difficult to pin down and it's either way too firm or too soft. Either way, the pillow makes your head roll to one side or the other if not perfectly centered. It didn't make for a good night of sleep. -

Read More I use it in very squishy form as a knee pillow. I use a big agnes sleeping giant memory foam pillow for my head, and I more or less bought this one on accident, mostly meaning to ask the price, as it wasn't marked, but I'm glad I did. It's about $5-10 too expensive, but honestly, it feels well made and compresses down to about 1.5 inches round and 4 inches long, and is VERY big as far as camp pillows go, very easy to adjust. I am very picky about pillows, and this one is going to be a regular with my travel kit in addition to my mountaineering pack. But try to know ahead of time if you want inflatable or self-inflating foam, because that is really the dividing line. Self inflating foam pillows give me massive ache and air just works better for me. -

Read More If your a light sleeper and move around a lot, this is not a good pillow for you. First, very slippery with nylon covering and it slides around a lot. Next, very tough to find the correct amount of air for comfort. Air has no place to go when you move around on it so it has a balloon like feel to it. Used it a couple times and drove me crazy, went back to a rolled up sweatshirt half way through the trip -

Read More Being new to backpacking, my first time out I used my clothes rolled up and it just wasn't comfortable. I found this pillow and thought "Wow, this is amazing!" and I loved it on the first couple nights I spent with it. As I have built my sleep system, first ditching the mummy bag for a bigger/wider sleeping bag and getting a wider/thicker sleeping pad I came to realize that this pillow isn't as comfortable as I thought it was. Through my process of tailoring my sleep system to my needs I thought the pillow was great at first only to find that everything else was much less comfortable and made the pillow seem greater than it really is. I love the compact size and weight. Just throw it in my sleeping bag sack and I'm good to go. The pillow takes a bit of fiddling to get the right amount of air to be ready for bed. Three full puffs and it is completely inflated. The size and thickness is great. But it is too firm. Let a little air out. Now a little more... OK now I can sleep on it, but there is no give in the balloon I call a pillow. It goes in the pillow pocket in my bag and stays there all night, but as I roll and turn there is no give to the balloon. Just firmness. If I slept on my back and just needed it to cradle my neck, I would like it. Unfortunately, I roll a lot and it just doesn't work for me. I found the Thermarest compressible foam pillow and tried it in the store. Instant love. The Cocoon will be getting returned. -

Read More This is one of the best things I've ever added to my (very weight-conscious) backpacking equipment set. Size: It packs down to nearly nothing - about the volume of a pack of cards (but more cylindrical in shape). Once inflated, it's a nice (small) size. Comfort: It's pretty comfortable for side sleepers. If you sleep on your back, it's not quite as good, because your head really wants to roll one way or the other (left or right). If you sleep on your stomach... I'm not sure what to tell you, as I haven't tried this. Maintenance: The silky blue finish is very attractive, but it also is an absolute hair-oil magnet. I generally don't have *any* oily-hair problems in life, but after using this pillow for 2 nights, there is a very clear dark circle (oil) in the center of the blue rectangle. It's easy to wash out in the sink with some soap and water (takes 3 min. and dries quickly - be sure to close the valve first!), but it's a pain to have to do it after each trip. My hair is not very oily (and it's < 1" in length!), so if this happens to me, I imagine it would happen to almost everyone. Tip: Don't fully inflate it; just take it to about 60-70%. It's more comfortable that way. Overall, I docked 1 point mainly for the oleophilic (oil-loving) material, and also because it's not as comfy as a real pillow - but it's *FAR* better than no pillow at all. It's also better (in my opinion) than a stuff sack filled with lumpy clothes. (And it's about even with a stuff sack filled with a down jacket.)
