- Leather provides natural "give" by stretching and flexing, and because it doesn't need padding, it's a cool option in warm weather
- The saddle will age and break in over time
- Bag loops permit the use of a traditional English-style touring bag on the rear of the saddle

Read More I ride often and this seat, from the very beginning, is amazing. Many people say that you will need to break it in before it becomes very comfortable, however, I have found that it is comfortable directly from the box. The things that I worry about in the long run include the security of the seat and the upkeep. As I have never had to worry about either before, this is new to me. I believe you will need to condition the leather with some sort of application, that I have not done yet. Also, since I live in Denver, the seat is always something I worry about others stealing. I have cover for it and will be using an old bike chain to secure it to my bike. All in all, it's a great seat. Comfortable, light, and seems to be made of the top quality parts. -

Read More First of all, I don’t know that any bicycle saddle can be accurately described as being comfortable. I think relative comfort, minimal discomfort and tolerability are more accurate terms when comparing saddle comfort. That being said, the Brooks B17 was more comfortable than several other saddles I’ve used, including some pretty expensive models. It was relatively comfortable right out of the box and the comfort level seems to be improving with use. Various sources have cited break-in estimates of 250 to 1000 miles, if correctly treated with Proofide, which I did. I now have 590 miles on the saddle, and compared with other saddles I’ve tried, I’m very pleased with the comfort level. I did try one ride in shorts without chamois. It was pretty uncomfortable, so I won’t be doing that again. -

Read More I had a Brooks saddle from 1962 - 1980, then quit cycling. When I bought a Novara Divano last year the stock saddle was killing me, so I went to the old reliable Brooks B-17. This thing is great! First; this thing feels hard, but there is just enough give, right out of the box, for comfort. Second; adjusting is finicky. I have had to make lots of minor shifts to get things just right. Now, I ignore my saddle and just ride my bike - the whole point. Finally, I know this thing is built like a tank. My last Brooks survived incredible abuse and still looked new when I sold it. I expect this one to outlive my bike - heck, it might outlive me. The only down side to my Brooks B17 is that the rails are too far apart for the bracket that came with my seat bag. I had to jury rig some "hook and loop" stuff to attach the bag under the seat. That is my only issue. Brooks saddles: still the best. -
Dec 10, 2012Comfort PlusIn 1976 I rode from California to Maine, 6000 miles plus by our route and all of it in a Brooks B-17. Just bought another and I love it.

Read More Had received a Hybrid bike as a gift and it had a nice saddle on it but could never get comfortable so I went to my local REI and asked them to recommend a good saddle and the B-17 from Brooks was there suggestion, yes the cost is high but after a break in period (at least for me) it has become very comfortable and it seems like the more I ride the softer and more comfortable it becomes. -

Read More Legend has it these require several hundred miles of break-in. On Sunday, applied Proofide to new saddle per instructions. Mon and Tues had 17+ mile rides. Both were more comfortable than with any other saddle I've used. BTW I am heavy (230) and ride mostly in high end of aerobic range. This is on a MTB which operates mostly on pavement. When road bike arrives I will transfer this and get another for the MTB. I wish I had done this many years ago.
Read More I've always had a lot of trouble with saddle pain. So I was constantly buying saddles with more and more gel padding. Finally I bought one of these based on their reputation alone. I was very skeptical since they seem really hard. Well the first few hundred miles were really uncomfortable, the next few hundred miles were still uncomfortable, but I was starting to think that it MIGHT come around. Around mile 600 I removed the saddle to return it to REI, but put it back on for one-more-ride and it was kinda OK. The next few hundred miles it got progressively better. Recently I took two different multi-day tours 250 miles and 420 miles and both were done in relative comfort (and way more comfortable than any gel seat I've every used). So the moral of the story is that for some (like me) these things take forever to break in, but well worth the effort and don't give up. BTW: I used lots of Proofid and backed off on the tension bolt during the process. I use the analogy that this saddle is like a stiff pair of mountaineering boots. They will never be running shoe comfortable, but running shoes are not what you want for a long/heavy hike. 5 starts now.... 4 stars because of the long break in time.
