Purchasing this sd-card version of the Garmin map means you must *always* use that micro-sd card with your GPS unit. It is not possible to download the map to another card, combine multiple maps on one card, or use this map with Basemap without having the GPS plugged into a computer. All of these things are possible with DVD or downloadable maps from what Garmin support told me. The support folks basically said "Sorry, you purchased a product which cannot do the things you are asking." The maps itself works pretty well. It appears to be similar to the older USGS topo maps.

Bought this product because I wanted more than Montana so we could navigate on trips to Idaho. Like some other reviewers I installed this SDmicro chip in my Garmin 76CSX and nothing( No maps and the gps didn't even reconize the chip was installed ). Called REI customer support and they said I could return it with no problem. REI is the best as far as refunding your money if you aren't 100% happy with your purchase. I tried something out of frustration and updated my gps to the latest software as per one reviewers suggestions from the Garmin site and then the maps worked. I had thought my gps had the latest software updates but you really have to have the very latest software updates before this map chip will work. There is no help at all in the paperwork that comes with this product. It would be nice if you could change the color of the contour lines somehow so maybe the roads and trail would stand out better. The use of this product is a challange at best on the small screen of a gps unit which most gps units have. When you zoom out past a mile or so the topo contour lines become so concentrated they just melt into one big blob and when you zoom way in so you can really see the seperate contour lines you can't see much more than a few hundred yards in any direction so it is hard to tell where you are at in relation to the big picture of the terrain you are in. I guess they couldn't do much seeing as all this information is just taken from USGS maps anyway. Very hard to pick out trails and remote dirt roads as everything is pretty much all the same color. It is really the only game it town though if you want 24K topo maps and 3 states on one chip. The limits of the small gps screens is what really handicaps the use of this kind of 24K software on a Garmin gps.

I ordered this on line as a anniversary present for my husband, because we had already planned a vacation to Yellowstone. We live in Washington and have that chip and it works great. When we got to Idaho we put the chip in and it was blank,When we arrived home I called our local REI where I had chip sent and they told me that without a receipt I could only get store credit or they could order me a new one but it could take two weeks to get I had already been to Yelllowstone> Wish I could go back in two weeks to use it but I have a job. Hopefully the new one will have the info I paid [$] dollars for

The ID/MT/WY version comes on a 4MB card. When I plugged it into my eTrex Vista HCx it would not display. Took quite a bit of searching, but I finally figured out that I needed a firmware update for my unit. Seems that my firmware version 2.80 that came with the unit only supports up to 2MB cards. The latest release - firmware version 3.00 was needed to support 4MB+ cards. Once I downloaded and installed the firmware update, the data card loaded right up. Now don't you think Garmin might put a note in the package to mention a thing like that? Or at least put a note on their website? I even checked their support section. Turns out the only place this is described is in the release notes for the firmware upgrade. Frustrating for me as a knowledgeable user. I can only guess this results in unnecessary returns and unhappy customers. As for me, I am a happy [GPS-enabled] camper now.
