After much research and reading many reviews, my wife purchased this bag for me as a X-mas present (The price-tag was a bit high, but seemed worth it for all it promised). The first-time out this bag performed miserably; my clothes were wet after being in the back of a truck covered in snow for 2 hours, it didn't perform any better in a moderate rain 2 days later. If you spend any actual time in the outdoors scaling mountains please heed this review and DO NOT buy this bag - if your plans are to travel to a motel & look cool with a brand-name, then this is for you.
I used this bag touring Europe this January, and couldn't have been more pleased. We visited Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France, and Great Britain, so we were moving regularly from hostel to hostel. Whether squeezing onto a train or walking through town, I was able to carry all that I needed for a month in Europe, plus room for gifts. This bag also served me well skiing 2 miles into a friend's cabin in northern Minnesota this winter. The bag was very durable and easy to strap down to the sled, not to mention waterproof. I also used this bag to go to Belize in March, and again was satisfied. The removable shoulder straps gave me peace of mind loading the bag onto the plane. Very solid and reasonably priced considering its multiple uses.
I had originally borrowed one of these bags from a friend for a trip to Zion NP and was impressed with the durability of the bag. It held up to being tossed around in baggage, drug through the airport, and thrown around in Zion. I immediately purchased one for myself to keep gear on weekend caving trips and have since purchased a second one and looking at buying a third one to keep my ropes in. While my bags ahve been strapped to a yak or flown around the world, they are used every single weekend and the hold up flawlessly. The quality of TNF has declined significantly in the past few years to the extent that I no longer buy their products, however these bags seemed to have survived the decline in quality, and I make an exception for them.
After a dissapointing experience with the Osprey Airporter I started looking for a new way to protect my pack and gear from the abuse of air travel. I settled on a Large TNF Basecamp duffel. With some creative packing I was able to fit my 85L Osprey pack, bear canister, and a week's worth of gear in to duffel (the large was just small enough to not trigger over sized bag fees). Very durable, very adjustable, and very comfortable to carry. Four round trips to the west coast later the bag shows no signs of damage aside from some cosmetic smudging and light scuffing. Better yet, my gear always emerges after a flight in the same condition as when I put it in. Note that while the zippers very burly, they are not waterproof so line the duffel with a trash bag if you're expecting some weather exposure. Although my stuff does fit in to the Large, I am considering buying the XL to allow for easier packing/unpacking. I expect the XL to cost more to fly with due to its size, however.
i just got this bag and tried it out this weekend. It was in the rain for a while and every thing was dry and it could get as dirty as i wanted it to. The only thing is it isn't good for carrying more than 15 min but over all its fantastic
These duffels from TNF are a must for gear-hauling. They are tough, lightweight, and easy to pack. I've flown multiple times with no tearing issues. I wish I had one in every size.
I purchased this bag for a canoeing trip and it worked out perfectly. No water got inside even after we had a small down pour.
