Read More I took my first backpacking trip a few months ago and realized that I REALLY needed one of these. I heard of it years ago and thought it sounded like a good idea but was a little intimidated about actually trying it. But after three days of squatting, I decided to try it, and I love it. It is super easy to use; I had no learning curve at all. I tried it in the shower first, but that was really not necessary. The placement is totally intuitive, and I have used it quite a few times now and never had any leakage. I really think any woman who tries this will wonder why she ever dealt with the squatting business! -

Read More While out on a 5 day river trip I tore the neck gasket of my drysuit and duct-taped it back together. I could no longer safely take the suit on or off at lunch. I had long ago ordered my drysuit with a relief zipper. So a good friend on the trip loaned me her Freshette. It worked perfectly and was so easy that I am now here on the REI site to buy my own. I had on two pairs of leggings and underwear, all with elastic waist bands. It was easy to reach in the little opening in my drysuit, pull down enough of the 3 elastic waist bands to tuck in the Freshette, and go. I had never practiced, but it was fast and secure. I wear fairly loose underwear, but my leggings had the normal degree of tightness in the waists. Being on the river, after use I just rinse the device in the river and put it back in the zip lock bag that came with the Freshette. I love the way the tube extends, because it makes a smaller package for storing. It gets small enough to tuck it in a pocket in a drysuit. There is an O-ring on the tube that gives me confidence that the seal is totally reliable. I had bought and practiced with one other female product in the distant past, but the tiny cup on the other product was not reliable to place. I am now kicking myself for not trying more devices all these years and finding the Freshette sooner. So nice to feel like I can drink as much water as I like during river trips. -

Read More I practiced with it at home and took it out on a 5 day solo trip. I initially loved that I could drink a lot without worrying about urinating, and I could urinate without taking off my backpack and taking down my pants...but a few things started to bug me. Namely, having to slide the urine-soaked clear part in and out in order to fit the contraption into its carrying case. Gross. I would much rather have a once-piece that doesn't require handling. (I may just leave the clear part out and keep it in a Ziploc, as others have mentioned). And then one day, I don't know if I was in a hurry or what...but yeah, totally peed myself trying to use this. There's a delay between when you start urinating and when you see it come out, so if you have the alignment wrong, you don't know until it's too late. Luckily I had clean clothes to change in on the trail, but it was pretty gross. So yes, I'd use it, but only until I find something better. -

Read More Bought this a few years ago for use while hunting, but it's part of my backpacking list. I have only had a 2-3 minor "issues" with it, all due to my not positioning it correctly. Yeah- if you don't you'll end up making a mess, but it's no fault of the design. It works. Sure, you have to keep it clean, rinse it out, maybe keep a dedicated ziploc bag for it, but read the directions CAREFULLY, know how it's suposed to fit your body, and you'll be fine.
Read More This product does what it says. It just turns out to be way less useful than I thought it would be. I really can't recommend it. I hardly ever use it, though it seemed like a great idea. Why isn't it useful? First: As many others note, you must urinate very, very slowly so as not to get urine all over yourself and your clothing. When I'm in the woods, I want to urinate and get it over with quickly! And the risk of getting a tiny bit of urine on my boots or the hem of my pants is nothing compared with the risk of getting it where it would go if I had spillage with this device. Second: Unless your base layer bottoms are crotchless, you can't use this without pulling your pants and base layers off just as far as you would if you were squatting, but because you are standing up, you are far more exposed than you would be if you were squatting -- not only to wind, but also to the eyes of others. In the winter, when one lacks coverage from foliage, this is a big problem. The only time I find this device useful is during the summer if I'm on a light enough hike that I can use running shorts (with attached brief) that allow me to use this without taking the shorts off at all. Third: It's another thing to deal with. So even in the summer, I usually choose to leave this at home. It's just easier and faster (and no less clean) to squat than to fiddle with this.
