This was a good option because it's cheap and doesn't take up much room in the closet/car...and there's just something good about cooking over the open fire when you're camping. I like that I don't have to worry about fuel and that you can clean it with a grill brush so there's no dish clean-up (just make sure you bring a trash bag to transport it in)The only thing I didn't like about it was the wider grates on the one side. The larger spacing on the one side is fine if your using a pan on it but I've definitely lost some meat into the fire, so beware. The other struggle is fitting it into the fire ring, so consider that when you're building one. -

Read More For a family away on a long camping trip this proved to be a very useful item that I'm sure saved us a fortune in propane canisters. Does get very dirty but we just made sure we had a plastic bag to transport it in & all was good. Allowed us to keep the stove much cleaner as it basically became the place to boil & the Grid cooked all the meat. Also meant the cooking became a shared activity as there were two areas where things were cooked & everyone joined in. For the price it would be nice to see it come in its own cover/case for isolating the dirtiness it accumulates (through the cooking process) for transportation. -

If it included some sort of heavy-duty, and washable storage bag it would be perfect, but since it doesn't you can expect anything and everything it comes in contact with (including you, your table, your vehicle, your packs, etc) to get black gunk all over it until you can get it home and hose it off. -

Read More We've owned this for a couple years. Use it mostly for car camping and to supplement or as an alternate to the small stove. Yes it gets dirty even if you don't cook dirtectly on it (use pans instead). Solution? A wet towel works wonders most of the time, and a simple small BBQ grill brush works for the tougher stuff. I know, I know, you don't want to carry all that extra stuff with you when hiking. You shouldn't carry this for hiking either. That's not what its for really. This is good for an established camp site you're going to be at for a few days. Either carry it with you when you empty out the car, or just take it out of the car if you've parked right next to your camp site. We've done burgers, steaks, dogs, coffee in a fire pot directly on this. Also used a couple cast iron pans for breakfast and one of those simple campfire bread toasters for bacon, sausage and eggs. It'll hold a couple 9inch cast iron pans, the lil toaster and coffee pot with ease. Turns out that stuff isn't all that heavy and the grid holds it well. Need to shuffle and juggle though since things only fit a certain way on it when you fill it up like that, but it still works fine. A friend has this same one, and he likes to get his fire HOT sometimes. I've noted a minor dip in the length of his grill, likely due to the combination of heat and the weight of his larger cast iron pan (11inch I think). Still, it holds up well.
