I'm a big fan of this jacket. It looks quite stylish and is form fitting. I could see me wearing this to work. It also is great out on the trail. I had it out at temps as low as the low 40s with just a thin base layer under it and it was perfectly comfortable. Also I found as there is a bit more padding around your core than the sleeves simply unzipping it reduces the warmth a lot so you can keep the jacket on a bit longer when things start warming up. It also has plenty of pockets, two standard zippered outside ones and internal pockets as well increasing functionality. Also love the thumb holes! It does fit a bit on the snug side so if you want thick clothes under it you'd probably want to size up, but in away the snug fit makes for a nicer look and it moves with you so doesn't feel the least bit restraining. The one minor downside is that I do find merino wool a little itch and in short sleeves the sleeves of this had that feel, but its nothing to annoying and you stop noticing after awhile and in long sleeves under it you wouldn't notice at all.
I’ve worn this jacket on several occasions this fall in Anchorage, AK with temps between 30 and 40 degrees F, with only a t-shirt underneath, and was plenty warm while doing minimal activity. I think it will be great for winter hiking/walking/snowshoeing/xc skiing in even lower temps. I typically wear a size small in most clothing but in Smartwool I consistently need a Medium, and this jacket was no exception. I’m 5’4” - 128lbs - 32DDD and the medium fits great without pulling across the back/chest while zipped. The inside of the jacket is surprisingly soft and slightly fuzzy, softer than any other Smartwool product I’ve tried! The front panels and collar include a thin puffy layer that adds warmth without bulk. I love that the pockets zipper shut and are deep enough to fit my phone or wallet. Bonus pockets on the inside for stashing extras plus an inside, zippered chest pocket that can also fit a phone. Top of zipper does come up close to my chin so I appreciate the fabric flap that covers the zipper. The Almond color is as pictured on the website. I plan to wear this jacket all winter, in Alaska, and since it is not bulky I’ll be able to throw a thicker jacket over it when needed!
Overall, a solid, well-performing jacket for outdoor activities! Holds up well to rugged use on trails, not tearing or pulling when snagged by branches or thorns. Also wore around livestock animals and it held up great to dirt, dust, head/horn rubs, etc. A great layering piece for cooler days and even lightly water resistant. Favorite features: thumb holes, lots of deep pockets, gorgeous color! Least favorite feature: not the most comfortable fabric...felt a little scratchy when starting to warm up in it. Being a bit sensitive to certain fabrics, this is the only reason negative for me. Recommendations for this jacket: a hood would be awesome! Also, the sizing is a bit off. Based on the measurements, a Large should have been adequate but it was tight in the chest. I was unable to zip it up. Otherwise the fit was fine. Note: I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review.
Perfect for early fall jogging in Alaska and great for layering under a rain jacket or windbreaker. I love the thumbholes on the sleeve. The zipper is really nice, it does not stick like other jackets I have.
Pros: Trim fit without feeling tight. Reasonable breathability for the weight of the jacket. Coating on front that provides a nice windbreak, while the back allows for moisture evaporation Pockets, pockets, pockets!! Layers well under a shell or raincoat Versatile, can be worn on trail, for a cold weather run, or to brunch. Flattering fit. Cons: No hood available on jacket. This is a great spring/fall jacket. The front layer provides the windblock that I really like to have when I head out on the trail on a brisk morning. The back remains breathable enough that I didn't feel like my back was drenched after an hour of hiking up hill in 48°F weather. The arms arm soft with nice thumbholes in the cuffs. The fit is very flattering without feeling confining. This layers well under a shell. This was the perfect layer under my raincoat in a cold, fall rain. Not too hot, not too cold. I didn't get a chance to take this on a run in freezing temps, but I suspect that this will do well and can't wait to give it a try. This jacket looks just as at home on the trail as it does going to grab a bite to eat with friends. Oh, did I mention the pockets? Ladies, this has FUNCTIONAL POCKETS! There are 2 external zip up hand pockets that are deep enough to keep your phone from falling out. The inside of jacket has an internal chest pocket that zips up and is also plenty big enough to fit your phone. Plus, the hand pockets are seen in place to form 2 large pocket inside the jacket too. This jacket has 5 pockets all big enough to securely hold your phone, keys, gloves, etc. The only thing that I would do to improve this jacket is to make a version available with a hood.
I’ve been wearing this jacket on our cool PNW autumn mornings, primarily to and from trailheads. It’s light but warm enough for cool but not cold weather. Although it will be easy to layer a vest over the jacket. It will be quite nice for hiking. I usually wear small in Smartwool, and this medium has just enough room for a light to medium sweater and still has some shape to it (not frumpy). The fabric for the pockets is a little thin, so I worry about its longevity. But a couple of weeks into wearing it, the pockets still feel sturdy. I wasn’t too sure about the light almond color, but so far it has resisted the filth of my car and dogs.
I absolutely love this jacket! It's soft and cozy, and has an abundance of pockets. I also very much appreciate the thumbholes at the ends of the sleeves. I've tested this out both as my primary jacket and as a layer, and it's worked well for both. It wasn't quite as protective against chilly winds as a primary layer, but it didn't affect my overall love for the garment. Added bonus: it looks pretty good on Zoom meetings!
Love this jacket! It is great for walks in Colorado fall weather and I think it’ll be great for winter running. Love all the pockets and thumb holes. The material is not too thick or thin - perfect for exercising during the colder months. I’m currently 2 months postpartum, so I’m not doing much physical activity but it’s great for walks and everyday use and I know it’ll be great for jogs and runs once I start doing that again. Will also be great for mountain hikes.
When the coat first arrived, it was a bit itchy. But a quick wash with cold water and the sleeves were soft and pleasant to wear. The coat is a perfect fit and kept me toasty warm. It layers well under my rain jacket, but is water resistant on its own and will keep you dry in a light sprinkle. There are lots of large useful pockets! And the zippers keep your items secure. The light tan color was a bit daunting to me, but I have received several compliments on the coat and the mud I got on the sleeves wiped off easily with a damp cloth. I think this coat will be a staple in my winter wardrobe.
This is a fantastic fall jacket. I have it in the teal color, which is gorgeous. Warning though, it definitely runs small. Normally I wear a medium in smartwool tops and sweaters, but I have this jacket in a large, and it's perfect to wear over t-shirts, but it would be difficult to wear over bulkier clothing without going up another size, as it is very form-fitting and flattering. Very soft, and keeps me warm. I do wish it came with a hood. And my only real annoyance is that the breast pocket is hidden on the inside. I'm grateful to not be deprived of the extra pocket, as this is where I like to tuck my phone, but it's annoying to have to open up the jacket just to awkwardly access it, not sure why they did this, but oh well. If I could subtract a half star for that I would, but I can't, so it's still overall a great jacket.
