The new Salomon OUTline GTX is my new favorite hiking shoe. I feel nimble and sure-footed when climbing and descending in both dry and wet conditions. They are extremely light and breathable with excellent stability and cushion. The new design incorporates super heel and midfoot lock-down with a roomy toe box. In addition, the Ortholite comfort foam insoles provide exceptional shock protection and all-day comfort. With GORE-TEX , rain is not a problem, my feet remain dry during prolonged summer storms.
Great, comfortable hiker – but the fabric frays at the crease/flex point on the sides of the toe box, and just after four months of use. I understand the rubberized coating not covering the area to allow the flex as you walk, but I also feel that a good round of testing would've revealed the issue. The Solomon contagrip outsole has held up well. Overall, a comfortable hiker – but the issue of the fabric fraying would keep me from buying it, again. I hope a solution can be found, because I really like the shoe.
Incredibly comfortable shoes - loved them the minute I put them on. However, the first thing I noticed was that the shoelaces are way too long. I wear a 7.5, so maybe they supply the same laces on the 7.5 as they do on the 13? I have to tie triple knots just so I'm not stepping on the laces. The second thing I didn't notice until yesterday is that, because the way the tread is designed, it wears out VERY quickly. I have worn them since late September - the tread is now almost flush with the sole in places. It's not like I've been playing ball on concrete. These are my everyday shoes. So, I really like them, but I have to be honest about their long term prospects. The tread simply won't last. I can't speak to the waterproofing as I haven't been in the rain with them.
Right out of the box I was really impressed with the OUTlines. Simple and smart design decisions throughout, plus lots of other things you'd expect from Salomon—like a gusseted tongue and GoreTex liner to keep things dry, but breathable. They felt great and didn't need any breaking in, even jumping right into a 10 mile day (I didn't wear sock liners, either). They're also light and feel wonderful underfoot. All in all, these are some great shoes that you can easily put lots of miles on. I've already put about 28 miles on mine, and can't wait to add more.
I used to only hike in running shoes; then I got boots (La Sportiva Nucleo High GTX) which I have been using year round (PNW) for 2 years. I decided I wanted hiking shoes for summer breathability and for easier packing for international trips. I tried on all the fancy, highly-rated shoes: La Sportiva Bushido II, La Sportiva Kaptiva, La Sportiva Spire, Solomon Sense Ride 2, Solomon X Ultra 3 Low, Solomon XA PRO 3D, Danner Trail 2650. However, only the OUTline and the Danner Trail felt the proper snug on my foot. Since then I did a 12 mile hike in Washington, then I took them to the Swiss Alps where I did a number of day hikes (each 8-12 miles) in all types of weather. One of the hikes included hiking 3 miles through 4 inches of fresh snow! These shoes performed admirably! Furthermore, I love the understated aesthetic; it doesn't have all that gaudy mesh with an explosion of lines; it just looks like a normal sneaker... Attached the only 2 pictures that include shoes :) Bottom line: Shoe fit is very personal! Reading reviews will only get you so far; just try on shoes from the major brands until you find one that fits right. For me, it was this one.
I have bought a pair of these shoes every year for about 5-6 years(except the Covid year). Each year, I take the older shoe and replace the footbeds, and I keep the shoe that is two years old or more for dirty work. I wear the shoe all of the time except when I wear business casual or Sunday clothes which is very infrequent. Activities include eating out, walking, yard work, and golf which saves me from buying a pair of golf shoes. Mainly, I use the shoe for long distance hiking (500 miles plus) on graded paths with very few rocks. The tread shows wear but I must have 3 thousand miles plus on the shoes each year. The treads do not mark floors, and I never get a blister as a result of the shoe. Further, I always go to the store to be sure that I get a good fit but I am not sure that is necessary. From my perspective, the shoe is the most important gear option for hiking.
These are beautiful shoes that fit my narrow feet perfectly. I like the grippy tread that will help with getting over slippery rocks - though there is not much to the tread so I can see how it will wear out quickly as noted in other reviews. But there is a bigger problem... there is a seam across the underside of the tongue which I can feel when the shoes are tied on snug. None of my other athletic or outdoor shoes have such a seam. It seems a poor design choice for the OUTline. Also, the seam on my right shoe bulges out so just wearing the shoes is painful. This is a manufacturing defect so these babies are going back to REI. But I like the look and fit of the shoes so much I might order again to see if I can get a pair without the bulging seam.
I have Salomon hiking boots (which I like), and thought I'd try a lighter low hiker for day hiking so I could save the boots for backpacking. I was leery of this shoe, because I was unsure such a light shoe could protect my feet on long rocky trails. After 4 hikes, the longest being a very rocky 9 miles, the shoes have passed the test! The bonus is these shoes won't take up half my suitcase like the boots. About size: to avoid toe jamming downhill, my boots are a half size larger than my street shoe. The OUTline shoes are a full size larger. About insole: I always replace insoles with Spenco Original insoles.
These shoes are light and grippy and appear to be well made, but they are so narrow that I must give a low rating. Those of you with wide-ish feet, consider yourself warned. I know it is my fault. I bought a 12 wide and hiked in them immediately. My feet are not especially wide, so I thought I was safe. But I was wrong: they are too narrow, especially in the toe box. Now it's too late to return them. I don't have crazy-wide feet. In Merrell, Keen, and Adidas, for instance, I wear a regular width, not a wide. But even the wide size in these Salomons is too narrow. My feet are pinched, and I have an expensive pair of shoes I can't wear, and I am sad.
This product was comfortable, but after medium use for 2 years (estimated 120 miles) the seal keeping the rubber sole attached to the shoe liner failed. The GORE-TEX works great, but when the rubber sole failed, I might as well have been wearing CROCS.
