Comfortable everyday shoe capable on trails
Received free product
Review: Salomon OUTline Low GTX Hiking shoes – Men’s Overall Rating: 4-1/2 Stars Summary: The Salomon OUTline Low GTX is comfortable all-around shoe that is very capable on a variety of terrain. I would compare it to a cross-over SUV – as it is a hiking shoe built into a sleek running shoe platform for comfort, but with the added functionality of a gripping outer sole paired with well-designed materials and uppers to manage trail conditions. However, I did not find them supportive enough to be used as my primary hiking shoes for rough terrain. Therefore, like the cross-over SUV’s, I see these shoes as best suited for those wanting an everyday shoe that can easily take on moderate terrain as well. I personally like to wear this type of shoe and would purchase these again in the future. Positives & Negatives: Positives: + sleek, running shoe look and feel + Contagrip sole provides good traction and transitions easily from roads to trails + very light weight + great fit - very comfortable out of the box + Lacing system works well and enables easy adjustments for comfort and terrain + Waterproofing and GTX work well Negatives: - TPU Shank not supportive enough for roughest trails (rocks / roots) - OrthoLite foot bed seems unlikely to maintain shape with frequent removals to dry shoes Out of the Box: I liked the sleek look of the shoe. It was less bulky than similar shoes that I have owned. It looks like a slightly beefed up running shoe, with bold coloring to match. I think the coating that went around the lower part of the uppers will protect this part of the shoe and likely help keep out moisture and dirt from the trail. The shoes seemed very light and actually weigh only 4 oz. more than my running shoes. The outer sole looked very capable, with deep lugs and a nice toe bumper. The GTX liner crinkled a little, but I expect that this will go away with use. My only concerns were that the shoes folded easily making me wonder how supportive they would be, and the OrthoLite insole looked very thin and was basically flat to the bottom of the shoe, with no additional arch support or heel cupping. Fit: The shoes were very comfortable out of the box. I have always liked the fit of Salomon shoes and these felt similar. I wear size 14 standard width shoes, and I have a low foot volume. The shoe fit me perfectly, but if you have a wide foot, this many not be the shoe for you. I really liked the laces on these shoes. Not normally something I look for, but I found these work exceptionally well. It was easy to tighten or loosen the laces across the entire front the shoes to set the right fit. This also made it very easy to adjust for a looser fit for walking on even terrain and to tighten them down for more serious hills. Trail Testing: The shoes were tested during 3 x 5+ mile hikes over a variety of terrain and 3 additional walks of 2-3 miles over primarily sidewalks. Trails consisted of hard pack dirt trails, sandy trails, and tree-root filled up and down hiking trail on the “Ant Hills” along Buffalo Bayou. Mentally, I also compared these shoes to two other similar shoes that I currently own: The North Face Hedgehog GTX SCR III and the Merrell Moab FST. The shoes were very comfortable walking on sidewalks. I thought I might feel the lugged sole a little, but walking was just as smooth as in my running shoes. I also tried these shoes across some hard pack and sandy trails, and the shoes performed just as well. I tried them on some incline, first on a cement retaining wall on a bayou and then up and then up and down a training hill at a high school. The shoes performed surprisingly well. The Contagrip sole was very stable on the steep grades. My foot slid in the shoes a bit at first, but I was able to easily snug them up with the before mentioned lacing system and they performed like a champ. I put the shoes through their paces a bit more on the Ant Hills hike. This is a rugged trail with lots of exposed roots along Buffalo Bayou in Houston that is a favorite with mountain bikers. It is the kind of trail best suited for a full suspension bike. As far as traction goes, the OUTlines performed admirably on this trail. They gripped the roots, dirt and sand very well. My only problem is the lack of support led to excessive foot fatigue. I think these shoes can certainly handle this type of terrain, but I would not have these be my primary shoes for regular hikes over rough terrain. To test these shoes with some added support, I did my final hike replacing the insoles with Superfeet – Carbon insoles. These worked well paired the OUTlines and helped provide additional support that I need. I will likely continue use these insoles with the Outlines in the future. Miscellaneous: I tested the waterproofing and it performed remarkably well. I did this with a static test of stepping into a tub of water, submerging the shoe up to the collar. I did one shoe for 30 seconds and the inside of the shoe remained completely dry. So, I did the second shoe for 90 seconds and the inside of this shoe also remained dry. The shoes were much heavier after this test, and I could tell that significant water was maintained in the GTX liner. I checked the shoes 30 minutes later and moisture did enter the inside of the shoe, but I consider this a successful test. The only issue is that these shoes did not dry quickly, and they were still moist 24 hours later. So, even though they can take getting wet, I would still plan to avoid it. One last thing to mention is that I was not a fan of the OrthoLite foot bed. It was basically a very thin piece of low density foam. It may have good antimicrobial properties, but that is not my primary concern. The insole in most shoes these days is not substantial, and I often replace them with improved insoles. I am also someone who like to take out the insoles in my hiking or workout shoes to allow my shoes to dry better. I do not believe this insole would stand up to being put in and out of the shoes regularly. Also, the insole was a bit difficult to get back into the right position after I did remove it. This is by no means a deal breaker for these shoes, but I personally would replace this insole.

Not Waterproof
I bought these hoping the Gore Tex membrane would be waterproof. It’s not. After cycling through 50 minutes of steady rain with waterproof pants and gaiters covering top of the shoe, water still gets in, especially the toes. Three stars for style and comfort.

New favorite hiking shoe

Received free product

The new Salomon OUTline GTX is my new favorite hiking shoe. I feel nimble and sure-footed when climbing and descending in both dry and wet conditions. They are extremely light and breathable with excellent stability and cushion. The new design incorporates super heel and midfoot lock-down with a roomy toe box. In addition, the Ortholite comfort foam insoles provide exceptional shock protection and all-day comfort. With GORE-TEX , rain is not a problem, my feet remain dry during prolonged summer storms.

Great Shoe – One Flaw

Great, comfortable hiker – but the fabric frays at the crease/flex point on the sides of the toe box, and just after four months of use. I understand the rubberized coating not covering the area to allow the flex as you walk, but I also feel that a good round of testing would've revealed the issue. The Solomon contagrip outsole has held up well. Overall, a comfortable hiker – but the issue of the fabric fraying would keep me from buying it, again. I hope a solution can be found, because I really like the shoe.

VERY comfortable, but the tread likely won't last

Incredibly comfortable shoes - loved them the minute I put them on. However, the first thing I noticed was that the shoelaces are way too long. I wear a 7.5, so maybe they supply the same laces on the 7.5 as they do on the 13? I have to tie triple knots just so I'm not stepping on the laces. The second thing I didn't notice until yesterday is that, because the way the tread is designed, it wears out VERY quickly. I have worn them since late September - the tread is now almost flush with the sole in places. It's not like I've been playing ball on concrete. These are my everyday shoes. So, I really like them, but I have to be honest about their long term prospects. The tread simply won't last. I can't speak to the waterproofing as I haven't been in the rain with them.

Doesn't Feel Like A "Hiking Shoe"

Received free product

Right out of the box I was really impressed with the OUTlines. Simple and smart design decisions throughout, plus lots of other things you'd expect from Salomon—like a gusseted tongue and GoreTex liner to keep things dry, but breathable. They felt great and didn't need any breaking in, even jumping right into a 10 mile day (I didn't wear sock liners, either). They're also light and feel wonderful underfoot. All in all, these are some great shoes that you can easily put lots of miles on. I've already put about 28 miles on mine, and can't wait to add more.

Great 3-season hiking shoes!

I used to only hike in running shoes; then I got boots (La Sportiva Nucleo High GTX) which I have been using year round (PNW) for 2 years. I decided I wanted hiking shoes for summer breathability and for easier packing for international trips. I tried on all the fancy, highly-rated shoes: La Sportiva Bushido II, La Sportiva Kaptiva, La Sportiva Spire, Solomon Sense Ride 2, Solomon X Ultra 3 Low, Solomon XA PRO 3D, Danner Trail 2650. However, only the OUTline and the Danner Trail felt the proper snug on my foot. Since then I did a 12 mile hike in Washington, then I took them to the Swiss Alps where I did a number of day hikes (each 8-12 miles) in all types of weather. One of the hikes included hiking 3 miles through 4 inches of fresh snow! These shoes performed admirably! Furthermore, I love the understated aesthetic; it doesn't have all that gaudy mesh with an explosion of lines; it just looks like a normal sneaker... Attached the only 2 pictures that include shoes :) Bottom line: Shoe fit is very personal! Reading reviews will only get you so far; just try on shoes from the major brands until you find one that fits right. For me, it was this one.

All day every day

I have bought a pair of these shoes every year for about 5-6 years(except the Covid year). Each year, I take the older shoe and replace the footbeds, and I keep the shoe that is two years old or more for dirty work. I wear the shoe all of the time except when I wear business casual or Sunday clothes which is very infrequent. Activities include eating out, walking, yard work, and golf which saves me from buying a pair of golf shoes. Mainly, I use the shoe for long distance hiking (500 miles plus) on graded paths with very few rocks. The tread shows wear but I must have 3 thousand miles plus on the shoes each year. The treads do not mark floors, and I never get a blister as a result of the shoe. Further, I always go to the store to be sure that I get a good fit but I am not sure that is necessary. From my perspective, the shoe is the most important gear option for hiking.

Nice narrow shoe but poor tongue design

These are beautiful shoes that fit my narrow feet perfectly. I like the grippy tread that will help with getting over slippery rocks - though there is not much to the tread so I can see how it will wear out quickly as noted in other reviews. But there is a bigger problem... there is a seam across the underside of the tongue which I can feel when the shoes are tied on snug. None of my other athletic or outdoor shoes have such a seam. It seems a poor design choice for the OUTline. Also, the seam on my right shoe bulges out so just wearing the shoes is painful. This is a manufacturing defect so these babies are going back to REI. But I like the look and fit of the shoes so much I might order again to see if I can get a pair without the bulging seam.

Great day hiker

I have Salomon hiking boots (which I like), and thought I'd try a lighter low hiker for day hiking so I could save the boots for backpacking. I was leery of this shoe, because I was unsure such a light shoe could protect my feet on long rocky trails. After 4 hikes, the longest being a very rocky 9 miles, the shoes have passed the test! The bonus is these shoes won't take up half my suitcase like the boots. About size: to avoid toe jamming downhill, my boots are a half size larger than my street shoe. The OUTline shoes are a full size larger. About insole: I always replace insoles with Spenco Original insoles.

Beware the width!

These shoes are light and grippy and appear to be well made, but they are so narrow that I must give a low rating. Those of you with wide-ish feet, consider yourself warned. I know it is my fault. I bought a 12 wide and hiked in them immediately. My feet are not especially wide, so I thought I was safe. But I was wrong: they are too narrow, especially in the toe box. Now it's too late to return them. I don't have crazy-wide feet. In Merrell, Keen, and Adidas, for instance, I wear a regular width, not a wide. But even the wide size in these Salomons is too narrow. My feet are pinched, and I have an expensive pair of shoes I can't wear, and I am sad.

Sole detatchment

This product was comfortable, but after medium use for 2 years (estimated 120 miles) the seal keeping the rubber sole attached to the shoe liner failed. The GORE-TEX works great, but when the rubber sole failed, I might as well have been wearing CROCS.
