Special Presentation by the ADK Club Genesee Valley Chapter

As a topic of discussion, fear doesn't get much respect. This is somewhat ironic because if you've spent any appreciable amount of time hiking, camping, or doing some other outdoor sport, there has probably been a time when you were scared. Not surprisingly, most people don't want to spend much time thinking about fear. But what if thinking more about it is a good idea? With more than 60 years of backpacking experience, J.R. Harris has had plenty of fearful moments, and with a degree in Psychology, he has spent plenty of time thinking about it. This presentation will take a close look at fear, specifically as it relates to spending time on the trail. It will cover topics such as the different types of fear, what you can learn from fear, and suggestions for dealing with it. Harris will also be showing slides and telling a few stories about fearful times he's had out there. The rest of the session will be interactive, so think about a time when you were scared, how you dealt with it, and what you learned from the experience.
