Farmington River Youth Stewardship - 8/7

Attention environmentally-interested parents, families, students, and friends! Help REI and its grant partner, Groundwork Bridgeport effect positive change along the Farmington River while fostering connections between urban and rural communities in Connecticut. Youth program participants will conduct stewardship activities as part of Groundwork Bridgeport's partnership with the Farmington River Coordinating Committee and the National Park Service Wild & Scenic Rivers Program. On one outing, youth participants will install 6 monofilament containers along the Farmington River to be used for the discard of used fishing line, which can be harmful to wildlife and the environment if it ends up in the river. On another outing, youth participants will help National Park Service River Stewards to conduct outreach to local businesses and river users, teaching them about the river's ecosystem and activities that could be harmful to its health. On another outing, youth participants will clean up the river and facilitate activities for day campers in the area. Participants will learn about the work that goes into making public parks and campgrounds clean and accessible.
