It's often said that nature doesn't care who you are, or what you look like. But is that really true for outdoor recreation? This workshop will help participants understand what we mean when we talk about gender, and how gender affects people's experience in outdoor recreation. Through a combination of small-group activities and large-group discussion, participants will explore fundamental concepts about gender in society, and will apply those concepts to the context of outdoor recreation. Participants will learn about concepts like gender expression and pronouns, and will reflect on questions like, "what does it mean to do sports 'like a girl?'" As a result of this workshop, participants will develop a nuanced understanding of how identity affects our experience as we navigate the outdoors-- including spaces that outfit us with gear or provide us with the skills that we need in order to play outside safely.
