Personal locator beacons and satellite messengers have become popular for backpackers, hunters, backcountry skiers, and other outdoor recreationists. It's a great way to communicate with friends and family back home when there's no cell coverage. But what happens if you get lost or injured and have to call for help? Two REI employees on a recent backpacking trip in the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness Area found out when they came upon someone experiencing symptoms of an impending heart attack and summoned help using the SOS button on their beacon. It took two hours to coordinate the helicopter evacuation, a much shorter time than it would have taken for his companions to run for help. Come hear their story over a beer at Mountains Walking Brewery and better prepare yourself for a situation that you hope you never have to experience!
