Prescribed (or planned) fires actually lead to many positive impacts on the environment such as decreased wildfires and their associated damage, an increase in biodiversity, and rapid new growth. Florida, sometimes known as the lightening capital of the world, has a history of wildfires started by the lightening from the more than 100 storms that sweep through the state each year. Because of this the plants and animals of Florida adapted to life with fire and now many even depend on it for survival. Prescribed fire is a safe way to apply this natural process, ensure ecosystem health, and reduce wildfire risk. Join Florida State Parks representative and AmeriCorps member Katie Knisely as she discusses this fascinating and sometimes misunderstood topic. Benefits of prescribed fire, fire basics, and safety on a fire line will be discussed in this presentation. No prior knowledge of fires or natural resource management is required to attend. Feel free to bring any burning questions that you may have!
