Work a little, play a lot - escape the city and head to wild and wonderful West Virginia! Team up with REI, the U.S. Forest Service, and local non-profit Heart of the Highlands to improve trails of then Canaan Mountain Backcountry. Located just outside Davis, Canaan Mountain Backcountry is home to over 25 miles of the gnarliest hiking and biking trails around. Participants will meet in downtown Thomas, WV at 8:30 a.m., break up into groups, and take a 20 minute bus ride to trailheads. After a short introduction to trail maintenance from Monongahela National Forest staff, participants will work on clearing downed trees and debris, opening up drainages, and cutting back overgrown rhododendron. Hardhats and gloves will be provided, but make sure to wear cut-resistant boots, long pants, and long sleeves. And bring water! Work will wrap around 12:30 p.m. when participants take the bus back to Thomas. Upon their return, folks are invited to gather over a shared passion for stewardship with a refreshing beer and food at Mountain State Brewing Company - all just for trail volunteers. Volunteers must register (space is limited) so sign up today!
