  • Group size 20 people
  • Instructor Captain Katherine Ainsworth

In 2016, the Norwegian Viking ship Draken Harald Harfagre retraced Leif Erikson's pioneering voyage from Scandinavia to the New World. At age 22, Katherine Ainsworth joined the multinational crew for the final, two-month leg of their journey, from Green Bay, Wisconsin to Mystic, Connecticut. Come witness the story of how 30 sailors, half of them women, braved the North Atlantic using sailing technology from the 10th century. Draken, the largest Viking ship in the world, has no quarters below deck, meaning that crew members are at the mercy of the ocean wilderness 24 hours a day. Ainsworth, a Coast Guard-licensed captain who also served as Draken's shipkeeper for two years following the expedition, is no stranger to the sea. She has experience aboard tallships and sailing yachts throughout North America and was part of the only all-female team to compete in the Marion to Bermuda Yacht Race in 2017 and 2019. Extraordinary women of all ages and nationalities played a central role in Draken's journey. Come hear their story and feel empowered to venture out on your own extraordinary expedition. Registration is required; all are welcome.
