Living in Arizona often means that mountaineering is both foreign & exotic, and requires significant travel to engage in it. Leaving many aspiring alpinists unsure exactly what to do & how to prepare. Experienced mountaineers may find themselves isolated without others with whom to share their knowledge. Erik Filsinger will draw on his half century of mountaineering experience to lead a monthly presentation on topics related to mountaineering. The intent is for each evening's coordinator to present a brief lecture that generates a discussion among participants to learn not only from the presentation, but each other as well. Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills will be used as a textbook for the presentation series, using topics/chapters as a theme for each month. The final topic list will be tailored to the specific interests of the participants. Filsinger has been actively mountaineering since the mid-'50's & has climbed over 200 mountains in North America & Europe while also teaching mountaineering courses as an active rock, snow & ice climber. He has been the past section chair of the American Alpine Club. He is the author of McDowell Rock: A Climber's Guide sold at REI.
This second installment in the monthly series will focus on the essential topic of Clothing and Equipment. We'll use Mountaineering - Freedom of the Hills as a textbook/outline for the topics (Chapter 2). The sessions are free but be sure to sign-up on REI's registration website for each night
