Winter is here in Appalachia! Time to hit the trail, and breathe crisp air while backpacking the iconic Appalachian Trail. One of our favorite places during this time of year, enjoy the breathtaking vistas of Annapolis Rock and Black Rock Cliff during the day and warm up at a campfire at night. We'll hike 8 miles round-trip as we use our 3-season backpacking experiences and adapt them to the cold as we enjoy the Appalachian Trail's beauty in the winter. This strenuous backcountry activity is perfect for experienced hikers. You bring the boots and backpack, we'll bring everything else you need to enjoy winter outdoors.

  • Adapt 3 season backpacking knowledge to pack, dress, and prepare for a winter outing
  • Adjusting 3 season camp craft skills to a winter environment, such as: choosing a camp site, camp cooking, water treatment, sanitation, self-care, how to start a fire, and Leave No Trace principles
  • Learn how to dress/layer for cold weather
  • Discover local areas where winter overnight backpacking is available

What to bring with you

Notes

We will meet at the Montrose Lot to assess student gear and pack our packs. We'll then caravan to REI Rockville to pick out meals and other last minute items you may need (like an extra pair of socks or a base layer). We will then caravan to the Annapolis Rocks parking lot to begin our hike and overnight adventure.
