November is Avalanche Awareness Education month. There have been 89 avalanche deaths in Alaska since 1999; an average of four people each year. The Alaska State Troopers, along with other professional agencies and organizations, respond to dozens of search and rescue calls each winter when people find themselves in situations they are not prepared to handle while out adventuring in Alaska's backcountry. If you love to ski, board, sled, hike, ride snowmachines, dog mush, climb or otherwise get out to explore this beautiful state in the winter, you should ask yourself, will you be prepared if something goes wrong? Do your family and friends a favor, join the Alaska Avalanche Information Center at REI on November 1st and learn critical skills for traveling safely in Alaska's backcountry.
