Want to become a lead climber? Then this is what you've been waiting for! This field outing in the Sierra is designed for those who have experience rock climbing and building top-rope anchors, and are ready to progress to lead climbing. We'll teach you how to lead belay, protect from a leader fall, manage your rope and rack, clip gear, and plan your route, all from the safety of a mock lead. REI Outdoor School will provide all rock climbing gear. Participants should have knowledge of top-rope anchors, belay on top-rope, and have one year of consistent climbing experience. Additional sport climbing anchors or technique classes serve as an excellent primer for leading sport.

  • To refine climbing technique including rope management, route finding, efficient climbing movement, and fundamentals of safety
  • To learn to lead climb and lead belay while on top rope, all from the safety of a mock lead.
