This course is for people of all skill groups, from those looking to take their gym skills outside to those looking for their first climbing experience with a minimum of hassle over gear. Just take the train to Columbus Circle and join your REI Instructor in Central Pack while you explore the local climbing scene, learn where the rock is hidden and what gear you'll need for your future in the bouldering world. Intro to Bouldering is designed to function as essentially a change of venue or a progression option for those of you coming from indoor gym climbing or someone that has joined us in a Learn to Climb Class. While the morning will focus on spotting, falling, and learning to manage your own risk while climbing outside, the later portion of the class will focus on the dynamic and powerful movement techniques of bouldering. Prerequisite: Learn to Climb or equivalent skills. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. All technical gear is provided but if you want to bring your own shoes or pad we would be happy to take a look at it and talk through all of your gear choices.

  • To reinforce the basic safety concepts spotting with a focus on route planning and site awareness
  • To review and develop basic climbing foot, hand, and body positioning
  • To practice personal climbing movement.
