With an underground distance of 2 miles, Ape Cave is the longest continuous lava tube in the continental U.S. REI will lead you through a guided exploration of this geologic marvel at the base of Mount St Helens on snowshoes. After a 1-mile wintery travel above ground, we'll arrive to the Ape Cave entrance. Descending into the cave, the warm cave air rises, staying at a constant 42 degrees all year round. Be prepared to be underground for about an hour as we travel 1.5 miles in the darkness and return above ground at the trailhead. Snowshoes, trekking poles, gaiters, and headlamps are provided. This is an amazing winter adventure with or without snow!
