Lake Michigan provides endless opportunities for kayak exploration and adventure. It rewards those who prepare well. This course will provide you with equipment knowledge, clothing selection, chart use, kayak maneuvers, and decision making tools that will help you prepare for paddling Lake Michigan. An introduction to kayak strokes, maneuvers, and rescues will be provided in a harbor setting. An interactive assessment of wind, waves, and weather will help determine where the rest of the journey takes us! Come prepared to get wet. Prerequisite: Learn to Kayak, or equivalent.

  • To become familiar with kayaks, equipment, and proper clothing for the Big Lake environment
  • To learn to enter and exit a kayak, including the wet exit, wearing a sprayskirt
  • To learn paddle strokes, boat edging and braces to enhance boat handling skills
  • To learn to perform the paddle float re-entry and the T-rescue
  • To be introduced to the affects of weather and conditions
  • To provide participants with an awareness of how to become a safe, responsible kayaker
