Introduction to Leading Trad Climbs

Before bolts there was trad gear. Learn to lead cracks while placing removable traditional gear such as cams or nuts. Our rock climbing instructors will teach you how to lead belay, place removable gear (cams and nuts), and plan your route, all from the safety of a mock lead. This class is designed for experienced top rope climbers wanting to gain the skills necessary to lead trad climbs. Participants should be comfortable top roping crack climbs at a 5.8 difficulty and have been climbing consistently for 1 year. Additional climbing anchors or technique classes serve as an excellent primer for trad leading.
- To refine climbing technique including rope management, route finding, efficient climbing movement, and fundamentals of safety
- Evaluate proper placement of cams and nuts
- To learn to lead Trad climbs and lead belay while on top rope
Plan to meet your instructor at the venue, look for the REI sign! Please be prepared to pay the $5.00 cash fee to park in the Forest Service lot. We also offer private sessions for individualized learning in a smaller group setting, at a date and time that works best for your schedule. More directions and information
There are two parking lots in this area, one before the covered bridge and one after it. The lot after the covered bridge is closer to the trailhead. Both lots are operated by the Forest Service and parking cost $5.00 a day, cash only.
