We are in Wisconsin and we'll be in Southern Wisconsin, I'm really not concerned about bear activity I just want to do the correct method with my food in regards to the other forest critters. Thanks for the replies and advice, I'm looking forward to trying this 😀

Thanks to both of you for your response. This 1st hike is just to figure everything out before our longer hike so we're staying within the boundaries of a state park and I don't believe there's bear activity there, I thought hanging food was done regardless because of raccoons, squirrels, ect. If the food is in your tent wouldn't they be scratching at the tent? I know I can make due for one night but the point of this is to figure out all of the ins and outs so when we go on longer, more backcountry hikes it won't be so intimidating 🙂

My adult son and I are doing our first backpacking trip this coming weekend. We're planning a longer trip in September and decided to do a 15 mile one nighter just to figure everything out. I was drawn to this for it's simplicity but now it seems anything but simple!! I feel like I am way over thinking and over packing. For food storage, I really don't want to invest in a special bag to hang my food, can I just use a sling bag from home and toss it over a branch? Any advice, tips or tricks would be much appreciated. I've been to a REI class and read so many books but I still feel like I am so unprepared!!!
