Thanks for the thoughtful ideas . And this would work for certain . Hopes are to find a solution that addresses the idea that I would be backpacking and would run into a section of trail ,, once in awhile ,, that created a dangerous obstacle because of a persons careless post holing . We are talking about frozen holes that trap a persons foot and leg when you plunge into it . Then it would clear up and the dry trail would continue . So packing skis or full size snowshoes for this unforeseen event is what I am trying to avoid . Perhaps a less "inconvenient " solution . Sort of like a "miniature " set of snowshoes that were just right to span the hole so that my foot didn't plunge into it and thus run the risk of an injury . Perhaps it is just a wishful thought . I have noticed that a childs snowshoe can be purchased that will accommodate my boots ( go figure ) and perhaps I should simply give it a try . Thanks again for the help
