Hey Everyone, just helping spread the word about this outdoorsy virtual event. Tickets can be found here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bernadette-mcdonald-climbing-the-worlds-highest-mountains-in-the-winter-tickets-131628906603 -------- Bernadette McDonald | Climbing The World's Highest Mountains In The Winter The world of high altitude climbing is challenging in any season. In winter, the cold and the wind and the isolation take it to another, almost incomprehensible level. And yet, there are those who are passionate about climbing 8000-metre peaks in the coldest season. These individuals savour the cold, they train for the conditions and they are motivated by the loneliness of the Himalayan peaks in winter. Men and women from Poland, Italy, Korea, the U.S. and around the world, have become known as the Ice Warriors. More resembling space travellers in their protective clothing and specialized equipment, their stories are epic, heroic and often tragic as they endure fierce winter storms, hurricane force winds and sweeping avalanches. From Everest to Nanga Parbat, Bernadette McDonald's Winter 8000 talk will introduce the Ice Warriors and their adventures on the highest mountains on earth, in the coldest season. Proceeding the talk, a short Q&A will be hosted by world renowned alpinist and Mountaineers Books Author, Steve Swenson. Sharing this event with the outdoor community! ----- Conrad Anker | Mountaineering and the Climate Crisis There’s no arguing that Conrad Anker is one of the most accomplished climbers of our time. During his 30+ years as a professional climber, he’s completed numerous first ascents (including the infamous Shark’s Fin on Meru), set speed records on big mountains around the globe, and scaled many of the tallest and most technical peaks on the planet. In between expeditions and explorations, he’s busy paving the way for outdoor enthusiasts to participate in a different kind of adventure: environmental activism. Join The Mountaineers on Thursday, September 24 for a virtual presentation from longtime Mountaineers member, Conrad Anker. He’ll shine some light on his favorite natural landscapes and the adventures they’ve afforded him, both here in the PNW and around the world. He will also candidly discuss the changes he’s seen to our wild places due to the negative impacts of the global climate crisis, and offer suggestions for how outdoor-minded individuals and organizations can help protect the places we love for generations to come. All proceeds from ticket sales and donations will directly support The Mountaineers ongoing Conservation and Advocacy work. More information and tickets here.
