I've hiked alone in the Canyon and highly recommend it. My itinerary was for three nights, down Grandview and over to Hance Creek, then Cottonwood Creek, Horseshoe Mesa and out. S Kaibab and BA are more popular trails, are you thinking day hike or overnight?

Ok this relates to hiking: as you're hiking along, if you have a choice between a big step up or down and a smaller step up or down, take the smaller step, your legs will get less fatigued in the long run.

I've hiked at GC a lot. I use two trekking poles, and for my knee I have a slide on compression bandage with an opening for the knee purchased from Walgreens and it works great.

Hi Digger, the weights above refer to the gear you are carrying but not food/water. I can pretty much take the same stuff (well, that's also weather and location dependent) whether it's a two day or 8 day trip, just the food and water varies. -Alane
