There are "bifocal" safety glasses both clear and dark for outside use.  I considered those but having tried them I don't recommend bifocals for hiking because the lower part of your peripheral vision is blurred for the trail and it increases the chance you will trip.    The Thin Optics stuck to the back of the phone solution works much better.  They make a key chain version too but I find that less convenient.  I do use the clear "bifocal" safety glasses when in the shop since it is works well in that situation where otherwise I need to wear the reading glasses under the safety glasses and constantly switch. ... You are so right!  Getting good intel on trail conditions is sometimes hard as heck.  Most trails don't have the benefit of having a dedicated FB group to talk about the trails, and when they do, most don't report back after the hike. I use weather.gov for the most accurate extrapolations of weather forecasts at different altitudes/places, perfect for places without weather stations. I also go to webcams at or near the trail head when available, also the viewing of traffic webcams near the trailhead will give a point in time look at what's going on right now, or to see if the snow has melted, at least that the traffic cams elevation. One thing I do, which I think a lot of folks overlook, is calling the nearest ranger station or sheriffs office or local SAR group, they usually have great information. good luck! ... View more

I have been using the Katydyn Hiker for a long tine and have always been satisfied, but when backpacking alone have switched over to the Sawyer Mini to save weight and space. I also carry a few Micropur Tablets in case I lose my filter, it breaks, or for what ever reason need a back up, but I have never had to use them. ... View more

I have a tent with this pole configuration and shape (one pole that does pretty much everything, and a second that's just a crossbeam on top). I find it the easiest style to set up, and you really only need two stakes to make a sound set-up. I can set it up by myself in about 2 minutes. It's also generally a lighter style since you don't have multiple big poles. I started hiking and backpacking long before hydration bladders were available. Being a bit of a purest, it took awhile for me to even try a bladder. Now I use only a bladder when day hiking and a bladder and Nalgene bottle when backpacking. The bladder enables me to quench my thirst without having to stop, take off my pack, and get to my water bottle. A full bladder usually sees me through most day hikes. When backpacking and I stop for a break, I will drink from my water bottle instead of the bladder so that I can possibly finish the day without having to refil the bladder.
