In 1982 or so, I purchased a Marmot model which would work perfectly as a blanket. Down filled, less than 3 pounds weight, it could unzip along one side and across the bottom to convert into a double bag by zipping in a separate under sheet. I still use it today, either as a single bag or, unzipped, as a quilt. that model is apparently no longer marketed, or anything comparable.

Useful info here on back country use in Big Bend. looks like lots of good stuff is available.
Big Bend was the first NP I ever visited (in fifth grade, about 1948 or so), so my personal views are a bit dated - the park has changed quite a bit since then......

Doing wildland SAR. it was quite evident that mental errors and lack of understanding of the natural environment and conditions was responsible for the vast majority of situations requiring assistance.. Accordingly, if I were to take someone with mental issues on a hike, I would try to be watchful and informative more than usual.i woul think a party of size of no less than three would be a good idea. it would certainly be a help to know of the specific issues of the illness and likely reaction to stress and conditions that might be ncountered on the outing.

You don't need a class to practice self rescue. As above, wear a PFD always and it is a good idea to have a buddy nearby. You undoubtedly will get to practice self exits as well, but it is really great when it actually works.

I would be very careful about commercial cleaning of down. I understand that careful hand washing is best, with careful low temperature drying. Apparently the problem is retention of commercial cleaning solvents, with bad effects on the user.
I am not an REI employee.

Is there another adult in the party? If not, I definitely agree with Phillreedshikes. For that matter, be really careful around the water, as well.
