How do I safely and responsibly get rid of an old goretex outer layer jacket? Too worn and broken to donate for someone to use, I want to make sure this goes into the waste or (preferably) re-use stream appropriately. Thanks!
Thanks for reaching out and for your patience as we connected with our sustainability team!
Unfortunately, whether your jacket is able to be recycled is going to depend greatly on where you are located and what recycling options are available. While it sounds like your jacket has reached the end of its useful life, the best course of action is to make sure that there isn't someone who might be able to make use of the jacket, even in a worn state, and consider donation. If it is beyond that, then your next step is to check with your local recycling system for options for recycling textiles. As an example, here in King County, WA, we have the Threadcycle program, which allows for almost all textiles to be recycled. Lastly, while not specifically about jackets, this Outside Magazine article, How to Recycle Your Outdoor Gear, has some good tips for all categories of gear.
Hopefully this helps, thanks!
