Looking for recommendations in the Kansas City area for camping

What is the best area for a weekend camping trip? I know the Ozark region is good, but I do not know where to go! Any help would be great.

@mhentges Thanks for reaching out!

We connected with our team in the KC area and here is what they recommend:

Outside of the Ozarks and the very popular Buffalo River in Arkansas there are several spots around KC! Lake Jacomo is good for camping and also has RV hookups around the lake. Weston Bend is a bit further out but is a beautiful Kansas State Park with good camping, hiking, and views of the river.

I am hoping @NatStateExp@Adventuremike , and @ARHiker can jump in here as they have provided some great advice about the area!

@mhentges There are lots of places in NW Arkansas to hike and camp, although it can be pretty miserable in the summer and tick-borne diseases are a real risk (I've had a few friends contract Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever). Check out the Ozark Highland Trail or the Buffalo River Trail. There is always Devil's Den State Park and Hobbs State Park on Beaver Lake if you are more into car camping.

Happy camping!

Hi.  Agreed - Arkansas is a somewhat "hidden/unknown" gem for great hiking on two long trails: Ozark Highland and Ouachita.

Here's a link to the Ouachita Trail Guide:

@mhentges Hi.  I am originally from northeast Kansas so can provide a web site that may help.

For trails go to this site:

Here's a nice site for Kansas state parks:

UPDATE: Here's one near my old home place - Banner Creek.  It has camping, fishing, and hiking.  It is not too far from KC, and I'd consider it as well.  Here's a nice web site:

Feel free to reply with any further comments.  I've lived away from Kansas for many years, but still know about some areas.

God Bless!

Hey @KenBrenner! Good to see you here! Thank you for sharing some of your expertise and experience. I'm really looking forward to exploring more of the state, and I'm going to add this to my list. Cheers!!
