The Eleventh Essential - A trash bag

Recently my son and I did another day hike while working our way through Segment 10 of the Mountains to Sea Trail and picked up quite a bit of trash. As the pandemic fuels a fire for all of us to spend more time outdoors, please consider that you are obligated to be a good steward of our natural resources.

Just look at these photos. None of this is ok. Two dirty diapers. Lots of wipes. Bottles. Wrappers. A shoe. A propane canister. And much more. This huge trash bag was filled and I could have filled at least on more just at the parking area. Don't carve into the trees. Don't leave trash behind. Pack out the trash you do see if you're able to do so safely.

Carry a trash bag as your eleventh essential. Practice Leave No Trace principles. Respect our natural environment.

I heartily agree with your message, but in this forum you are preaching to the choir..... I spent a career picking up after visitors  to NPs......

Ok, should I just delete the post then? It's always worth saying. Always worth a reminder. Some of us don't have the esteemed career you do, but we're at least trying to not be someone you have to pick up after.

Nothing wrong with preaching to thee choir - please forgive me if I came on too harsh, but people who really litter don't go anywhere near REI.  Sometimes they just have to get a bit of instruction, but all too often, it takes a hefty fine to get their attention.

A point though is that people are more likely to litter if there is litter.  So an action "the choir" can take is to gratuitously pick up litter whenever you can.  I have done this on occasion even picking up other people's left dog poo if it happens to be close by my dog's leavings.

Some people use this as their motivation to walk.    There is a YouTuber...Adrenaline Jackie who's theme is to collects litter on trails and areas she visits.  The more people pick up and are seen doing it the more the ignorant will catch on.  You certainly won't fix the problem since the self centered will always be with us,  but less trash left lying around is less trash left lying around.
