Ive two little rescue mutts. One is a three legged, toothless female; the Red male, Thad, is an awesome pack dog. I take both hiking with me; only Thad carries. Good "job" for him. We have to train, as I use hiking poles. We were all able to do the CT, AT and Lonestar. Dogs are good hiking mates! Protect their paws, check for blisters; allow them to sleep in your tent, dry, on a pad, Keep them leashed, always; well fed, and hydrated. They are the best! He carries their poop bags, light bowl and extra leashes. about 2 lbs per side. I have to carry the rest. Yuck! Their caloric requirements are higher when we hike. They are cheerful, friendly, non complainer companions and LOVE to be with you!
