Best Tips for Backpacking with Dogs?

I just got a puppy and we are planning our first destination backpacking trip to Jackson Hole area. This requires a flight from Arizona (~3-4 hours); airline/flight undecided. I have never travelled with a dog and I am wondering how others have successfully navigated this topic. My dog travels well in a car, is 20 lbs, and is not an emotional support animal. What backpack/kennel have worked well and any tips for keeping the furry one inconspicuous to other travelers?

If your dog is only 20 pounds, he might fit under the airline seat, assuming you are in regular-sized planes. It might be worth bumping yourself up to first class to make sure your buddy can travel in the cabin with you. I do recommend sedation in case the flight would upset him.
