Astrophotography and Laser Pointers

has anyone ever tried shinning a laser thru the view finder of their dslr camera? specifically a sony a6500?

I can hear the 'gasps' now, lol. I have read horror stories about  lasers vs cameras (anecdotes from primarily concerts), so please calm down.

this would be used for polar alignment and locating DSO's (deep sky objects)

I have read testimonials that this indeed does work, on some cameras, but I'm not going to try it unless I can find some real evidence that it won't fry anything.

The Sony a6500 is a mirrorless camera, and so has an electronic viewfinder. How could that even work?

you're right of course, I've dropped that approach. looking at a few other polar alignment techniques.
