I live in a small town near Pensacola. After retiring from a career in a cubicle, I am finally getting outside. I am gradually building gear, knowledge and stamina for bikepacking on my new mountain bike. I hope to find some locals soon with the same interest.
Hi @MikeNWFL - Welcome to the community!
It's great to hear that you're getting outside more. Your goal of bikepacking is a great one. Our Bikepackers group should be a great resource for you. Take a look at the posts already in that group and then feel free to ask any additional questions you have. There are many passionate cyclists and bikepackers in this community, so you should get some good insight for starting up with this new activity!
NW Florida is definitely a beautiful place to bike. I was just in Perdido last week and have always enjoyed roaming around the various inland parks in that area. Do you have anywhere in particular you are looking to go out on your first rides?
Thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself. We're happy to have you here!
There are some amazing springs all along the area, and hidden hiking spots throughout NW Florida and surrounding areas. I may be there in a week or two ( depending on weather) and roaming about the Carolina's Georgia and Florida. Enjoy your retirement from desk life!!
@REI-CarterC Perdido is a nice area to ride. Whenever I can save enough pennies for my camp kit, I plan to ride to Bear Lake in Blackwater River Forest for my first overnighter. Now, I am riding near home around south Santa Rosa county just to build up some distance.
@MikeNWFL - Thanks for sharing that spot! I have only known Blackwater River Forest for kayaking, so now I have some more research to do for the next time I'm down that way.
If you're keen to share, it'd be great to hear updates as you prepare for that eventual first overnight ride. It's always fun to see and hear about all of the different setups people end up with!
