Hi all had intended to go to REI but with stores closed asking here. I wear custom orthotics and have begun going on 3-6 mile day hikes. Running shoes do not cut it through mid and water. Looking for recommendations on a Relatively inexpensive lightweight water proof boot with removable foot soles. TIA
@EllDave Thanks for reaching out!
To start, all of our major brands has removable footbeds and should accommodate after market insoles such as yours. While it is hard to recommend footwear without having you in front of us to try items on, we recognize we are currently in a unique situation. Hopefully we can give you a few options to look at and then you can make it in to a store soon to try some on and talk to a footwear expert.
In the meantime, please take a look at these styles of boots:
Both Keen and Merrell boots tend to be a little more forgiving in terms of volume in the boot, so if you need or appreciate a little more room they would be a good option. If you have a narrower or lower volume foot you might want to take a look at a boot by Vasque.
Hopefully this helps and we'll see you in store after we re-open our stores. Thank you!
In addition to what @REI-JohnJ said, I would throw in the Oboz Sawtooth II Mid as well. They accommodate my over-the-counter orthotics and come in regular and wide sizes. After some pretty aggressive foot surgery a few years back, these were the best option for me. Happy trails @EllDave !
Hey there! If you already have running shoes you are comfortable with, my suggestion would be to try some water proof socks from REI or neoprene socks, works for me, surprisingly warm and comfortable! Saves some bucks as well, Good luck!
