where's this?
That's Camp Schurman at the foot of the Emmons Glacier on Mt. Rainier!
@REI-JohnJ, thanks. Man...that is really beautiful, I can see why it's a climbers paradise.
It is an incredible spot! What is most amazing is that from that camp you can see almost the entire climbing route up the Emmons Glacier. When we were climbing it in 2009, we watched a group of ski mountaineers coming down the route. Because of the vantage point we had below, we could see that they were going down the wrong way and they were going to get caught in a dead end between crevasses. No one at camp had any way of communicating with them, obviously, so we had to just watch as they continued towards a point at which they would be stuck. We just hoped no-one would ski into a crevasse.
They ended up descending most of the glacier before realizing the error, and had to re-ascend their skied route and descend again the right way adding almost 5000 feet of total elevation to their climb. We watched the whole thing unfold from camp Schurman. We were actually in our tents trying to sleep (to prepare for an alpine start the next day) when they skied into Camp Schurman that night and were greeted by a round of applause from the other climbers, guides, and rangers at camp. A year later I actually found a video they made of their trip on youtube. It makes for an incredible memory from and incredible place!
@REI-JohnJ Fantastic story!
