I would just add:  Don't forget the National Monuments and similar areas!  While many NMs are relatively small in size and scope, often celebrating memorable history, this is not always the case

Consider Canyon de Chelly MN, one of my favorites, createdto preserve spectacular cliff dwellings and archaeological remains.   Quite extensive in area, it is also part of thee navajo Reservation, with permanent residents within thee canyon, growing crops and herding livestock.  This imparts to de Chelly an atmosphere unlike other parks = much more of a living, breathing landscape.

There are more than 400 different areas within the National Park system. Enjoy as many as you can.  They all have something to offer th visitor.
