As California moves into the "purple tier" (= the highest) restrictions on travel and mass activities I am wondering if anybody knows of what kind of surprises we will face during the winter season in Sierras. There is not much available on the subject on the resorts, and essentially nothing on what the park service may impose on the backcountry access.

There is a concern among folks that due to the (possible) restrictions on lift access many people will try to venture in the backcountry, including people who do not have proper awareness and/or training, which might result in higher incidents rate with the subsequent ban or substantial limitations to backcountry travel (e.g., closure of parkin in the popular places).

Does anybody have any insides on what the situation is or likely will be?

Please check the Yosemite park official website:  https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/covid19.htm

Information relative to covid 19 is front and center.  Backpacking with the proper permit is allowed - no change there.

Check other park web sites for similar information.  There should be official websites for the pertinent national forests as well.  If all else fails, give the relevant office a ring and chat away!
