Hey! I am late to this thread but I am from the area around Bankhead National Forest. If you are in Alabama and are not hiking the Sipsey Wilderness, you are missing out. There are so many beautiful trails and waterfalls.
I backpacked 28 miles in Sipsey this past October and that is only a small part of Bankhead National Forest. It is remote and we didn't pass anyone hiking until the weekend and a lot of people were out camping. There are good campsites and water is readily available. AllTrails maps are *typically* reliable for trails but there are so many treasures off trail that I would ask a local or regular hiker about!
