Best men's bike for recreational use

Looking for a quality bike to give as a birthday gift. We typically go for shorter rides (10-15 miles) and usually are on paved bike paths. We're on Long Island so there are some hills, but nothing too crazy. I'm not looking to spend more than $1,000, but could be convinced to stretch my budget for a quality product. Any recommendations?

@Jkline Thanks for reaching out!

What a thoughtful gift! Fortunately, we have several bike options that should work great for you. If you're riding mostly on pavement, we recommend a hybrid bike which will give you road wheels and tires with a more upright and comfortable riding position. Check out these models for some ideas:

  • Co-op Cycles 1.2 Bike. This is a solid and fun hybrid bike for tackling urban conditions and paved trails.
  • Co-op Cycles 2.1 Bike. This bike has slightly wider tires (40mm) and a front shock to help absorb any rough spots on the road or trail.
  • Cannondale Quick 2 Bike. Narrower road tires (32mm) and upgraded components make this a fast and efficient hybrid bike.
  • Salsa Journeyman Flat Bar Sora 700 Bike (Also comes in a Claris 700 model if you are interested in drop bars). This is a hybrid bike with a touring influence, as it has braze-ons on the front fork for carrying cargo.

If you'd like to learn more about hybrid bikes we encourage you to check out this Expert Advice article, How to Choose Hybrid Bikes. Also, when you're ready to purchase, take a look at this Expert Advice article, Bike Fitting Basics, to help you narrow down which size you will want.
