My 2 boys and I (12 and 10) have been hicking for several years now, and I'm looking to take them on their first overnight backpacking trip. We would really like somewhere thats not crowded, and within a few hours ride from Northern Illinios, and would be good for 2-3 days of backpacking. Not interested in backpacking to a spot and day hiking from there, but to simply hike, camp, repeat.
I have been looking into section hiking the Ice Age Trail which is not to far from us, but there is a lot of road walking on the sections close to us.
Looking for advise, much thanks!
House of Flavors in Ludington is worth the trip alone! I have a cabin about 30 minutes from there. Such a great area.
@Bonfire I can neither confirm nor deny that I may or may not be guilty of visiting HoF once a day (or more) when we're out there.
My wife and her mom & step-dad have been going up every year for about 25 years now I and I've joined them when I entered the scene about 15 years ago. In the past 5 years, it's been great to see a whole slew of new restaurants and eateries open and flourish.
We stay at Hamelin Lake when we're there. If you want and if you're up there at the same time, I'll let you know when we go up - it would be great to have a hiking partner, if even for a day hike in Manistee.
I stay on Hamelin Lake once or twice a year! So much fun!
