You can rent cars and RVs "one way" even across states although it is more expensive. 

For gear like tents etc. you will almost certainly need to return it to the place you rented it from.  It seems that is the case for REI and they have store across the USA!   You might be able to mail it or ship it back but that is not usual so you would need to ask the particular vendor before you count on it. 

It depends a lot on your plan but it may be more cost effective to buy any heavy or bulky gear you need when you arrive and plan to dispose of it responsibly at the end of your trip viewing it as just part of the cost.  If it is still in good condition you should be able to donate it, give it away or possibly even sell it.
